Outdoor First Aid - Level 3

This comprehensive 2-day Outdoor First Aid (OFA) course is designed for people intending to act as a first aider who wish to have extended first aid skills in remote working, outdoor pursuits, mountain / hiking  or wilderness first aid in order to help a casualty in remote areas and to take control of an incident in a hostile or hazardous environment.

This course will provide the participant with the essential knowledge to give effective immediate life-saving skills whilst acting calmly in an emergency until ambulance and emergency services arrive. Hands on practical sessions will give the participant the confidence to deal with a wide variety of incidents  and emergencies.

Successful completion of the course results in a first aid certificate specifically for outdoor activities and the course meets the requirements of the Institute for Outdoor Learning Statement of Good Practice for Outdoor First Aid Training at Band 3.

There is sufficient content in this course to satisfy the requirements of the HSE in respect of Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) and an additional certificate can be provided to evidence this although  additional fees may apply.

Course Details

Whatever outdoor activity you specialise in – our comprehensive 16-hour course will cover all the most important first aid situations to assist you to handle an emergency with confidence.

The OFA syllabus includes a range of topics . These include:

  • Managing, recording and reporting of incidents
  • The HSE and BSI / First Aid Kits
  • Priorities of First Aid
  • Personal safety
  • First aid in a remote locations
  • Improvisation and incident management 
  • Examination of a patient (Primary and secondary survey)
  • Vital Signs
  • Cardiac Conditions
  • Basic Life Support (CPR ) and AED
  • Choking
  • Unconsciousness & Recovery position
  • Hypothermia and Hyperthermia 
  • Treatment of wounds, bleeding and shock
  • Fractures, Sprains and strains 
  • Head & Spinal Injures
  • Crush injuries 
  • Burns
  • Bites, Stings and Allergic reactions
  • Medical emergencies - Stroke, Asthma, Epilepsy, Diabetes

All our first aid qualifications provide certificates which are valid for 3 years. CPR is taught in accordance with the current UK Resuscitation Council Guidelines and all our courses include the use of the AED (Automated external Defibrillator)

Course Assessment

All candidates will have to complete a two multiple-choice tests and achieve a pass rate of 75%.

Whilst there is no formal practical exam, the course consists of numerous outdoor practical exercises and scenarios. All students will be expected to be fully involved  and continuous practical assessments will cover :

Fractures 

Course Duration Information

This 2- day class can be held during the week or on a weekend, scheduled to suit your requirements.

As there is a requirement to have 16 content hours, the course will start early and finish late on both days.

Individual price: Unfortunately only group bookings are done for this course but we can work with you to put a group together.

Other Information

Please note that as this is an Outdoor First Aid course, many of the practical session will be held outside (despite the weather).  

The OFA course certification is valid for three years after which you will need to repeat the 2 -day course.
